Hal Koerner, the two-time Western States Endurance Run champion, sat down in his Ashland, Oregon, running store to talk with me before he takes off for Squaw Valley, where the 100-mile race starts Saturday morning. He opened up about his hopes and plans for the race this weekend, his pain at last year's Western States, and the experience of being at the center of a film that documents his low point last year.

The other day I went for a run by myself and violated all my rules regarding safety. The experience prompted me to share these safety reminders, which can be wise for travel and hiking as well as for running. A lot of the tips and gear seem like common sense. Now in its 30th year, the Skyline 50K in the Oakland Hills is one of the oldest continuously run 50Ks in the country, always held the first Sunday in August. It exudes an old-school ultrarunning spirit and tradition carried on by dozens of longtime Bay Area trail runners who come together in their version of a summertime block party.
